Internal Linking Checklist for Small Websites
Internal linking is the practice of connecting related pages on the same website. For small websites, a good internal linking process helps search engines discover pages, helps users navigate related topics, and helps teams clarify which pages matter most.
Internal Linking Checklist
- List the target page and the search intent it should own.
- Find existing pages that mention the same topic or adjacent problem.
- Choose anchors that describe the destination naturally.
- Link from high-context pages, not only from navigation or footer areas.
- Avoid using the exact same anchor text everywhere.
- Check that every important page has at least a few relevant internal links pointing to it.
- Confirm that links are crawlable HTML links, not hidden behind scripts only.
- Review links quarterly as products, prices, and content change.
Anchor Text Examples
- Good: "SEO Automation Pack" when linking to the product page.
- Good: "AI SEO brief workflow" when linking from a guide about content briefs.
- Weak: "click here" because it does not explain the destination.
- Risky: repeating one exact-match anchor on every page without context.
