Internal Linking Checklist for Small Websites

Internal linking is the practice of connecting related pages on the same website. For small websites, a good internal linking process helps search engines discover pages, helps users navigate related topics, and helps teams clarify which pages matter most.

Internal Linking Checklist

  1. List the target page and the search intent it should own.
  2. Find existing pages that mention the same topic or adjacent problem.
  3. Choose anchors that describe the destination naturally.
  4. Link from high-context pages, not only from navigation or footer areas.
  5. Avoid using the exact same anchor text everywhere.
  6. Check that every important page has at least a few relevant internal links pointing to it.
  7. Confirm that links are crawlable HTML links, not hidden behind scripts only.
  8. Review links quarterly as products, prices, and content change.
